Kimi K2 Thinking

Model Overview

Kimi K2 Thinking is Moonshot AI’s flagship reasoning model, officially released on November 6, 2025. It is currently the world’s strongest publicly accessible long-context reasoning model available via API.

  • Architecture: Trillion-scale Mixture-of-Experts (MoE)
  • Total parameters: > 1 trillion
  • Active parameters per inference: ~32 billion
  • Pre-training: >15 trillion tokens + multi-stage reasoning & tool-use alignment

Key capabilities that put it ahead of all other public models:

  • Native context length: 256K tokens (~180-200K English words or 380-420 pages of typical technical/legal/financial documents)
  • Real-world verified: stably processes > 1.6 million characters (~500 pages) with near-zero information loss
  • Tool calling: reliably executes 200-300 consecutive tool calls in a single session without planning drift or degradation
  • Unique transparent reasoning: when “thinking mode” is enabled, every response contains a complete, structured <thinking>...</thinking> trace plus a clean final answer — ideal for finance, law, code auditing, and research where explainability and auditability are non-negotiable.

How to Use

Fully compatible with the OpenAI API. Simply modify the base_url and key for seamless migration:

Python

from openai import OpenAI

BASE_URL = "https://inference.canopywave.io/v1"
API_KEY = os.environ.get("CANOPYWAVE_API_KEY")

client = OpenAI(api_key=API_KEY, base_url=BASE_URL)

response = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="deepseek/deepseek-chat-v3.2",
    messages=[
        {"role": "system", "content": "You are a helpful assistant."},
        {"role": "user", "content": "please tell me a story."}
    ],
)

print(response.choices[0].message.content)

Use Cases

ScenarioTypical Input SizeWhy K2 Thinking Wins
Full financial/legal due diligence100–500 pages (prospectus, contracts, 10-Ks)One-shot risk extraction + structured report
Large codebase audit & refactoring100K–200K lines of codeFull-repo architecture diagram + vulnerability list + executable migration plan
Book / thesis deep reading & critiqueEntire book (e.g., DDIA, Clean Architecture)Chapter map + core ideas + modern stack translation
Long-running autonomous agents100–300+ tool calls, days of contextZero drift in multi-day research, trading, or monitoring tasks
High-stakes finance, law, researchComplex modeling + regulatory complianceTransparent reasoning trace satisfies auditors and regulators

Prompting Best Practices

1. Always force thinking trace for serious tasks

You are a world-class [role]. Use structured <thinking> tags to show every step of your reasoning. Think step-by-step, cite evidence, self-check, then give a clean final answer.

2. For maximum reliability

use two-stage Plan → Execute First ask: “Give me a complete step-by-step execution plan (no execution yet).”

After you approve → “Now execute the plan exactly.”

3. Recommended parameters

  • Reasoning / audit tasks: temperature 0.0-0.3
  • Creative / writing tasks: temperature 0.5-0.7
  • Always set extra_body={"enable_thinking":true} when transparency is needed

4. Self-check prompt (add before final answer)

Before giving the final answer, double-check for logical gaps, missing clauses, calculation errors, or outdated assumptions.

Pricing & Limits

ItemDetail
PricingInput: $0.48 / million tokens Output: $2.00 / million tokens
LatencyDue to the reasoning process, this model generates more tokens and takes longer than non-reasoning models.
Hard context ceilingAuto-truncates beyond ~2 million characters (~520–550 pages)
Knowledge cutoffDecember 2025 (use RAG/search tools for anything newer)
Best forHigh-value, high-complexity tasks only — not for casual chat
